This is the best time to start your seeds! Too early and they’re all gangly…

One of my favourite days of the year!

Plants are in🥳

We’re checking on everyone. All the plants are from Canadian growerrs and zoned for South East Alberta. Today we check them for quality, then they’ll be sized up with some healthy SAS soils and boosters. They’ll be beautiful for you to take home.

We’ve got some fun ones this year!

This weeks starts! Slow seeding this year as we work on the new soil but….yeah!! We’re almost to spring🌱🌱🌱

Taking some quiet space…but not gone! We are building some new things into life right now. So even though we’re quiet this year - we wanted to send happy spring and seeding wishes to everyone! These are our ‘Nebula’ carrot seeds, finally being cleaned🫣. Happy Spring!

- Pink Salmon (Male) He swam on - we fished for three days to catch our limit of Dolly Varden for Denis’s mom…then kept a couple pink female salmon for us. Otherwise we went home exhausted and happy to have let so many go. #takeonlywhatyouneed

We love you all but feel it’s time for an update about us.

Things have been tough this year. It was not the year I was planning, but life happens.

We are going to be a little less present here in social and taking care of a few things farm and family.

I always built this little idea as an exercise for a better future. Sometimes that means I need to focus on more outside the garden.

We are still going to have the specialty tulips that are ordered for sale, and the gourmet garlic.

Pleas message as soon as you know you’d like some and I will get you on the order list. As always you pay when we drop off or pick up no deposit needed.

I’ll have info on the types of tulips and garlic over the next week. For now the garlic braiding class and Iris classes are cancelled for the fall.

Thank you all for your support. We are not gone, but cocooning seems necessary at this point for us.

Let’s talk about perennials. Early on I decided to build this little urban farm through perennials. Lots of folks in flowers do the opposite. They start with the annuals (flowers that start be seed every year). This isn’t a bad strategy. You can change up colors as trends move. Seeds and annuals are cheaper individually to grow so if you loose a crop it doesn’t set you back too bad. Plus if you have the space - nothing beats a sea of happy zinnia or sunflower faces looking back at you.

But I knew - we are so small. If I didn’t start the perennials early (the plants that come back each year) I wouldn’t be sure of the space I could give them or how to care for them. I knew it would take 5-10 years to figure out a healthy batch of perennials plants that could produce consistently. I also knew I have very little space for seed starting and relying on that was unstable.
So each year we’ve brought in more forever plants. Some have worked out, some have been tough. And one of the surprises that I’ve had are day lilies.
This little beauty for example, is ‘Katherine Woodbury’ and she’s beautiful! I’ve been waiting 2 years to see her bloom. The colors can be different then you are shown on the photos when you by something based on the soils minerals…so I wasn’t sure - but in 2 more years we’ll have buckets of these💖. We’ve added 4 more colors this year to our day-lilies….which aren’t in fact a “Lily”. They are hemerocallis. This is really important as Daylily is edible! **Lilies are not!**

Pickle Day!

Truth is I didn’t grow the pickling cukes. I never do. Usually I go grab some bags from the greenhouse so they are all a uniform size. And I can’t afford to give them the real estate since I usually only pickle once every 2 years. But these beauties were gifted by a friend who’s also an amazing local gardener - thanks @kelly.cheesman.58 !

It’s rare to be a gardener and be gifted gardening so I always appreciate it more🌱 as one knows the true cost of the work.

We’re eating Keto so pickles have become an important way to vary a quick meal.

The Path forward - it’s not always easy to see.

I’ve had some pretty big learning moments this year, in the garden and outside of it.

I’ve felt ‘lost in the weeds’ sometimes…quite literally. I’ve found my thoughts this way too.

What really matters to me? What should I be focusing on? Is something a distraction, or a new path?

Today I feel a little more at home in my weeds. I have learned my weedy friends teach me more then my plants usually do about the world.

Weird right? But I guess the challenging people in our lives teach us more about ourselves too…so I guess we’re similar to plants that way.

Can you see the Burdock growing in the Elder? The Elder, an herb of passageways and change is growing alongside Burdock the original root food that nourishes us right to the cellular level. One is very European alchemist, the other more Indigenous Shaman. One is very cooling, the other gently warming. I would never have put them together…but nature did.

Now I’m going to have to find a way to combine these for some new herbal support as I can see their balance.
So I find I enjoy the weeding and lessons even when the path is hard to see.
